Tips to help you properly prepare for hurricanes, floods and tropical storms

Natural disasters bring with them lots of uncertainty, but having carefully thought-out plans put in place ahead of time can help ensure that you’re better equipped to handle the storms that come your way. As a large part of the east coast is currently facing imminent weather threats, we wanted to take this time to remind you of our best preparedness tips.

Hurricane season can cause widespread torrential downpours, strong winds, flash flooding and even debilitating mudslides and landslides. Be sure to check on the current hurricane risks in your area, make a safety plan and find out where local official shelters are located. In addition, ensure that you have non-perishable food and water on hand, and locate emergency equipment such as flashlights, generators and radios.

During a severe storm, be sure to:

  • Frequently check media sources for news on the storm’s progress
  • Follow all instructions given by local officials, including evacuating if told to do so
  • Turn your refrigerator to its coldest setting and keep the door closed
  • Unplug small appliances and turn off any propane tanks
  • Fill bathtubs, sinks or large containers with fresh water
  • Keep away from windows and doors if strong winds arrive
  • Have cash on hand in case of an emergency
  • Fill your vehicles with fuel
  • Bring grills, potted plants and lawn furniture inside if strong winds are predicted

Through our experience as insurance providers, we’ve learned that the following steps can greatly help reduce your risk of damage or loss of property. Use and share these resources to best prepare for natural disasters and to help protect your homes, businesses and communities.
